GyaO! Interview with Benedict Cumberbatch

This is from the Japanese press tour. Benedict talks about how JJ Abrams described character's role for Star Trek Into Darkness. It sounds like we'll get some good scenes between Benedict's character and a number of the core characters in the film. Very interesting when he references other well known pop culture characters and how they're similar to his character. I'm VERY excited to see his character.

I like that he admitted he cried at the beginning of the first film lol. And I'm wondering if his hair is going to be short like that in Sherlock? They don't start filming unto March so maybe it's possible his hair will grow enough by then to look like it did in the 3rd season? Of course it would make sense for his hair to be shorter (or possibly a different color) because he's been on the run?

That could be a wig, though.

It was all natural ;) I don't think Benedict has ever had the same hairstyle for more than one role lol.

With a face so distinct, he's gotta change up something XP

I still haven't watched the last episode of season 2. I'm waiting until the 1st episode of Season 3 so I know that Sherlock is OK. I saw my twitter feed have a complete meltdown that lasted for weeks when they watched that episode and I get REALLY invested in characters so I know I will be suffering all sorts of feels when I do watch it. I've I've managed to avoid most spoilers, although I have a vague idea about how it all goes down.

I still cry at the opening of the Star Trek XI even now. lol

Have you read any of the original stories?

I have but it was a very, very long time ago. I was obsessed with Sherlock Holmes in middle school and read everything I could get my tiny little hands on in the school library. I missed many of the short stories because the library didn't have them and I didn't know to look for them but at this point, I can't remember everything that I read or didn't read because it was almost 20 years ago. lol

They are actually online for free because they are in the public domain http://www.readsherlock.com/.

They'll probably give him a wig since the shooting starts in March.

OR he'll be Sherlock with SHORT HAIR! XD

Egads, he drones x_x

Very excited to see who the hell he'll be. :D

And it seems he's becoming more aware of fandom. This is good.

Did you see the video where he kind of implied that The Turnabout Intruder was his favorite episode? I hope he was trolling.

He's pretty n00bish, so...

Seeing that he's done work in both Sherlock and The Hobbit, it's not too surprising that he's aware of fandom in general. Both are huge and influential before the shows/movies even aired and from his interviews, he seems aware of fan expectation to source material/previous canon/etc.

So many theories out there for his character...and I've decided I'm not going to get stressed out about it. Though, I do like some of the arguments for him being Sybok even though the chances are slim to none.

Yeah, I know. He's definitely become more aware. I just remember interviews of him when he first started doing Sherlock and learning what fandom can be like. It was adorable.

As my girlfriend said, he's going to be Gary Mitchel, even if his name isn't Gary Mitchel.

I don't know if it is just the time of year and how I always wish I was in the Nexus with Picard, but don't you think he would make an awesome Picard if they ever get around to STNG? Maybe in 20 years or so Cumberbatch might like to give it a go?

He is so intelligent and thoughtful in his answers.

This might sound petty, but I don't think he'll be able to pull off the bald-with-a-strip look. Maybe if they made a animated TNG series (but then why not just use Stewart)

I could see it but it would be so weird seeing him bald.

I'll be so glad to see interviews after the movie's released. Right now they're all so tense and you can literally see them mentally editing everything they say.

Can't say I'm thrilled about that combo of characters BC's character (I'm doing it too, lol) is based on, especially the first one listed. Urk!

Oh and....character. :D I tease.

I read it as: Extremely intelligent, personable, and manipulative + a touch of batshit crazy + very destructive and deadly

Just based on what Benedict has said in other interviews. So I guess he's a sociopath?
