Found this fail-tastic article from the entry about it today at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. Basically it argues that sci fi has been taken over by the womenfolk and the gays and this is omg bad since, naturally, sci fi has always been about killing aliens and blowing up stuff, not relationships and the human condition, and this will no doubt turn our children gay. *insert sarcastic eye roll here* Oh, and the author mentions Kirk and Spock as the origins of slash in a derogatory manner.
Just a small sample of the epic fail that is "The War On Science Fiction and Marvin Minsky":
"As we know science fiction has inspired boys to pursue careers in science, engineering, and technology as men. With women killing science fiction on television, the current generation of boys won’t have this opportunity to be inspired to work in these fields. There is still a great deal of written science fiction that is real science fiction so all is not lost. However, many boys who would have gone on to make scientific discoveries and invent new technologies will not do so since they will never be inspired by science fiction as boys."
I don't even know where to begin with this, I'm so pissed off.

SO, COMM. LET'S TURN
EDIT: Finally got my act together and made a macro

Gee, I think there are a few people who'd argue with this troglodyte. A few folks like, say, Norman Spinrad and Robert Silverberg and Harlan Ellison and Theodore Sturgeon (if he were still around, bless his heart) and Arthur C. Clarke (ditto)...people with, you know, A FUCKING BRAIN OR TWO AMONGST THEM.
The fact that he sees science fiction as all about the gizmos and the testosterone just goes to show that he really knows very little about the subject at all. So that tells me what amount of my attention his idiot rantings deserve - NONE AT ALL.
October 14 2009, 07:36:18 UTC 2 years ago
My understanding has always been that science fiction is focused primarily on the human condition, using technology as the backdrop and catalyst for events unfolding in the story.
And anyway, who wants to sit and read a book that's nothing but technobabble?

IT MAKES ME WANT TO CHANGE MY MAJOR TO BIOCHEM AND FIND THE CURE FOR CANCER OR SOMETHING. TOO BAD IT'S ALREADY TOO LATE FOR ME TO DO THAT.
BUT SERIOUSLY, SHOW THIS TO ANY OF THE SCIENCE MAJORS AT MY ALL-WOMEN'S COLLEGE AND THEY'LL CUT A BITCH. SHOW THIS TO ANY SCI-FI FANS AT MY COLLEGE AND THEY'LL GO APOPLECTIC.
SERIOUSLY, NO.
JUST NO.

Wasn't Star Trek one of the first shows to show women in a more professional role? Yeah, a lot of them were yeomen, but I'm pretty sure I saw a lot of WOMEN SCIENTISTS AND MEDICAL OFFICERS AND ENGINEERS ABOARD THE FUCKING ENTERPRISE.

Of course, numerical representation isn't enough nor is it accurate. But I can DEFINITELY tell you that the women I know who have entered into engineering/science/technology ARE CONTRIBUTING TREMENDOUSLY to them.

BUT our tenured faculty? 100% male. That's the problem we're running into now: we're getting closer to parity among students in science but there's still rampant discrimination against women when it comes to the coveted academic appointments.
