Death By Lens Flare: Drink Into Darkness

I came across this and thought I'd share with the community :-)

The latest installment of Star Trek warps into theaters this weekend, compressing decades of canon into an action-oriented thrill ride. Regardless of whether or not you like what J.J. Abrams has done with the franchise, he has left an indelible lens-flared mark on it. Among Trekkies like myself, there is a game going around capitalizing on Abrams’ flare for flare.

Let’s play Drink Into Darkness.

Lens flare typically occurs when you film an intense light source, and some of that light reflects and ricochets off the imperfections of the camera lens. It’s easy to create when shooting something like the Sun, but you can also induce it artificially with extra lights and mirrors. Abrams admits that he used extra flashlights and mirrors to create the numerous flares in 2009′s Star Trek. In fact, he used this technique so many times that he created his own meme.

To play the game, get to your local theater and surreptitiously bring in your favorite drink. We are going to take a sip every time we see a lens flare. If the 2009 movie was any indication, you are going to have a lot of fun playing Drink Into Darkness, or die.

Set Phasers to Stun

Now, I assume that anyone who chooses to play this game will drink responsibly, but what if you didn’t? What if a person actually took a sip of alcohol every time they saw a lens flare in Star Trek Into Darkness, as per the game stumbling around social media?

First, we have to assume a few variables. As alcohol content and body weight play huge roles in determining how drunk you get, I’ll use average US male and female weights, as well as an average beverage with 12% alcohol by volume (like wine). We’ll be conservative and only take a sip (a teaspoon) each time we see a flare. Next, we need the number of lens flares. One intrepid Trekkie counted 1,013 lens flares in the first film, so we’ll go by that standard (others have counted less, but let’s party). Lastly, it depends how fast you play the game, so we’ll assume you start at the beginning of Darkness and stop 127 minutes later.

With so many lens flares, you are going to get wasted, but we have to calculate just how wasted. Using our variables, we can plug them into the formula that the American Prosecutors Research Institute uses to determine blood alcohol content (BAC) in DUI cases.

Laying it all out over the course of the film, you get a graph that looks like this:

With so many lens flares, you’d be sipping on your drink about eight times per minute. At this rate, neither men nor women would make it out alive. But because body weight plays a big role in BAC, men would at least make it past the first act before their breathing fails. Men make it 85 minutes before trekking into darkness while women only make it about half that. That’s what happens when you beam over five liters of alcohol into your system.

People have made it past the 0.5% BAC cut-off that I used here–some even past 1%. But the 0.5% rule holds generally; if you don’t die outright you will probably be poisoned.

Of course, I am assuming a constant stream of flares, a certain kind of beverage, and that you are dumb enough to keep drinking even when you can’t feel feelings anymore. You could always just stop in the safe range, but then you still have a lot of “not the Star Trek I know and love” to get through.

If you are dead-set on playing Drink Into Darkness, a Trekkie who wants to get tanked, you will end up a literal die-hard fan.

Nifty Gift from the Sneak Peek!

I had the awesome luck to get tickets for Wednesday's sneak peek and the movie did not disappoint. I enjoyed it thoroughly. No spoilers!

As my friend and I exited the theatre, one of the staff members was handing out rolled up posters! I took a picture when I got home to share with friends on Facebook, but decided I'd share here too, since I didn't see it anywhere else on the community:

Luckily, my friend isn't as avid a Trek fan as I am, and she gave me hers as well. ^_^ The poster is about 3-4 feet long, and quite nice. In the upper left hand corner there is a logo for the IMAX theatre, but in the upper right hand corner is the date of the Fan Event, 5/15/13.

Back in '87, I was filled with both anticipation and apprehension at the idea of a "new" Star Trek. Having grown up with the crew of the Enterprise, they were like my second family, a group of uncles and aunts I never saw because they were way off having adventures, but heard from every week when they sent back their stories of the cool stuff going on out there. You can imagine the mixed feelings at the idea that some bunch of interlopers was going to take over the ST universe.

So that was my state of mind when the first episode appeared. I'd already known about Patrick Stewart, but was having a hard time accepting the idea of him as a noble starship captain, since the only role I'd remembered him in was the asshat redneck father of Jane Grey in Lady Jane. (Seriously, that guy was a dick.) Okaaay, we'll see. But I got a jolt of delight when William Riker walked in, and I squealed, "Holy shit! It's the babe from The Twilight Zone!!"

See, I'd just caught Frakes a while earlier in an early episode of the revamped Twilight Zone, called But Can She Type? It was a cute, funny episode, and he'd had a great little part as a pickup artist in a bar. He made quite an impression on me, even in such a brief little cameo. He'd been so yummy, in fact, that my one disappointment with Riker was the lack of a beard. SO glad he eventually grew it back!

Oh, and it's a great episode, especially if you've ever worked in an office, or for a raging dick of a boss. The series is on DVD; I know Netflix has it. Check it out!

So I saw this shiny poster for The Motion Pictures a few weeks ago. Was going to share it here, but then I saw it was the first in a series, so decided to hold off and just do the lot in one go. These are from a site called cromeyellow.com, they decided to celebrate the release of the new film by looking back at the films with the original crew, and the 2009 film. But they added in a fun mix by getting some really cool posters made up! Also included are some posters for 23rd Century Starfleet tech, and an interview with the artist, Matt Ferguson.

Hello all! I just got home from a Star Trek (2009) screening where Leonard Nimoy did a Q&A...

After the movie, before the Q&A there was a pre-recorded video introduction by JJ & ZQ. (Spoiler: they do Nimoy impressions!) I missed the first few seconds, sorry...

After that Mr. Nimoy did quite a wonderful Q&A. I didn't have the best angle for recording, but nearly everyone I saw was also taping so hopefully those videos will surface on the internet soon. The highlight for me was definitely Mr. Nimoy singing Bilbo Baggins live for us.

Special SFX Magazine & BBC Interview with JJ

The A-Z Of Star Trek comes with three official free gifts: a Starfleet insignia badge, an A2 Into Darkness poster, and a print based on the classic 1967 episode “Mirror, Mirror”.

The 124-page magazine is split into 26 sections (such as “N is for Next Generation” and “E is for Enterprise”). Covering every TV series and movie, it’s the ultimate guide to 47 years of the franchise.

Cost me about €12, but looked pretty good from the cursory glance I gave it last night. And I'm waering the badge right now. :-D
