Star Trek Episode “This Side of Paradise” Launches at Blanche Lavizzo Park

Hello Earth Productions is proud to announce its second annual “Outdoor Star Trek” performance series. Performances will be Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 2pm in Dr. Blanche Lavizzo Park’s amphitheater on the weekends of July 23-24, July 30-31, and August 6-7. The classic episode has the crew of the Enterprise landing on the distant colony, thought to be long deserted, only to find the colonists mysteriously alive and well. Joy DeLyria directs, and the show features Kris Hambrick as Captain James T. Kirk, Helen Parson as Mr. Spock, and live music arranged by Sean Robinson. The show is free and open to the public.

“This Side of Paradise” was written by D.C. Fontana and Nathan Butler, and was the twenty-fourth episode of the first season. It is highly regarded among fans, ranked as one of the top ten episodes of the series on Entertainment Weekly and IGN.com. When the crew of the Enterprise lands on Omicron Ceti Three, they expect to find no survivors. Instead, they find mysterious colonists, mind-altering space pollen, and the final threat to Vulcan logic: love. Thematically, the story explores the conflict between desire and duty and achieving personal pleasure versus social progress. The production aims to both appreciate the humor in the writing and respect the thought-provoking underlying messages. It interprets Star Trek not just as popular culture, but as a piece of art, with timeless concerns that take on timely nuances as American society moves into the future. In order to explore those nuances, the production employs everything from gender-blind casting to eclectic music choices, including but not limited to flute and banjo.

Hello Earth Productions produced the Star Trek episode “The Naked Time” during the summer of 2010. The company happily accepts donations during the performances, but there is no charge. It is recommended for spectators to bring cushions, as the amphitheater seating is concrete. You can learn more about their activities at helloearthproductions.org or on Twitter at /hello_earth.

FanExpo Meet Up!

This is for any Canadian GQMFs who will be attending FanExpo this weekend. There'll be lots of fine GQMFs around, including William Shatner on Sunday!

The Southern Ontario GQMFs are having a meet up after the con ends on Saturday at 7 p.m. for dinner or dessert or drinks at the Elephant & Castle on King street near the con. This location is close enough to walk to, but far enough away that it shouldn’t be completely full with people just coming out of the convention.

Feel free to make your way over there as soon as possible after the convention to join us for a late dinner, drinks, dessert or even just to chat. Even if you won't be going to FanExpo feel free to meet us around 7.

Closet Con! Report for duty!

Sorry, I missed the meetup post on Monday and by next Monday, well, it will all be over! Soooo are any other mad GQMFs going to be at Closet Con in Leicester this weekend? That would be the K/S fan convention disguised as a 'media writers group' in a pretty university. ALL SLASH WEEKEND. I already know tracionn is going to be there; anyone else? And should we have some sort of sign or greeting to recognise each other by?

Star Trek Las Vegas

This past weekend was the World Largest Star Trek Convention. This means that this was ALL about the love of Trek with ALL the major players and guests (plus some!).

This is your chance to share photos, epicness, videos and recount meeting other ontd_startrekers.

For those of you who couldn't make it, come and have a look at all the shenanigans our GQMFs got into.

I recommend you don't post all your photos here, but share a few and link up to your journal/youtube/etc.

Let the epicness begin...

Dragon*Con - Sept. 3-6, Atlanta, GA

This is your one-month-out planning post for Dragon*Con!  (Here's a link to the first post.)  I'll repost one week before the 'con itself for final planning purposes.  I'll try to remember to also comment in the weekly meetup post with a link to this post, but others should feel free to do so as well as I'll probably forget about half the time ;)

New news!  TPTB are planning to try to break the Guinness world record for the most people dressed in Star Trek costumes -- info here!

Announced guests as of August 2 (subject to change, and Garrett is apparently working on some Super Sekrit Guest thing -- someone who's never been to 'con before...)

  • Robert Beltran
  • Avery Brooks
  • LeVar Burton
  • James Cawley
  • Denise Crosby

Shenanigan ideas:
  • Photo shoot(s)
  • Meeting up to attend various Trek panels together
  • Return of the room party chez starlady42 (featuring Green-Blooded Hobgoblins)
  • ??? (ideas?!? post 'em!)
This will be my thirteenth year on Dragon*Con staff, so if you've never been (or even if you have) and you have questions, feel free to ask.  There's also the dragoncon  community if you're interested in other perspectives.  Also, if you're interested in being on staff (staffers work 25 hours in exchange for free entry [first-time staff also pay a much-reduced entry fee]), let me know -- I can't guarantee anything, but I can put you in touch with some folks.  Working the 'con is fun, if tiring, and you get to see everything from a unique angle. :)

Looking forward to seeing some of you there -- we had fun last year and hope you'll join us this year!

SAN DIEGO COMIC CON

This past weekend was the monster meet up of comics, anime, TV, movies, etc, that is the San Diego Comic Con.

A lot of STXI GQMFs were there (KU, ZQ, Peggster) as well as our own brand of GQMFs, so this is your chance to share photos, epicness, videos and recount meeting other ontd_startrekers.

For those of you who couldn't make it, come and have a look at all the shenanigans our GQMFs got into.

I recommend you don't post all your photos here, but share a few and link up to your journal/youtube/etc.

Let the epicness begin...

This past weekend was the London Film and Comic Convention (LFCC) starring among (many, many, many) others William Shatner.

I know quite a few people from this community went to see him (including me), so this is your chance to share photos, Shatner epicness, videos and recount meeting other ontd_startrekers.

For those of you who couldn't make it, come and have a look at all the shenanigans our GQMFs got into.

I recommend you don't post all your photos here, but share a few and link up to your journal/youtube/etc.

Let the epicness begin...
