[sticky post] Warning: Spoilers are officially ON

With the release of the movie in the last few countries and the release of the DVD, Star Trek Into Darkness is now officially everywhere and hard NOT to find a way to see it.

That being said, the spoiler warning policy has no longer any reason to be in effect.

I realize the spoiler policy was probably made obsolete after about a month after the UK release (FOUR MONTHS AGO), but I really wanted to respect even the minority who was restricted from access to the movie by crazy geographical/marketing reasons (been there, done that). And I gotta hand it to you all, you did amazing! Best community members ever, hell yeah!

In conclusion, dear members who haven't seen the movie (by choice or not) this community will now be spoilerific everywhere, including titles and body of posts NOT UNDER A CUT. Therefore if you wish to filter out this community now is the time to do so. Everyone else...

Spoilers: poll opinion

It's been more than 2 months since Star Trek Into Darkness opened in the UK and it still hasn't premiered in a lot of countries!!!!!

So, fellow GQMF's, I ask: are spoilers moot by now? Has everybody seen the movie (either in a theater or not)? And if you still haven't seen it, do you mind spoilers? Have you been spoiled already? In conclusion

ontd_startrek: A Walk Down Memory Lane! :D

HAY GURLS HAY!

First of all, I used to be 'peacock', in case anyone was wondering who the hell this random mod-person was.

I just want to say, it is AMAZING to see a lot of comments on the trailer post, and faces old and new. The Summer of '09 seems like such a long time ago, the days of constant spamming, walking posts, sparkle text, and party posts. I really hope, despite the fact that fandom is fractured all over Twitter, Tumblr, Dreamwidth, that we can see in some of the good times we had here, once again, when STXII comes out.

So, in the spirit of starting debate/discussion/chatter, here are some of my favourite posts over the years! :D I hope they bring you some happy/amusing/eye-rolling memories. Feel free to add your own in comments, and I'll add them to the list, or if you're new to the comm, introduce yourself! Hell, do anything you want in comments. Tell us what you've been up to since 2009, what new fandoms you're in, what's happened in your life. I often wonder about some of the names I used to see a lot around here, so say hi if you're still out there!

A List Of Previous ontd_startrek Awesomeness: From The Sublime To The Awful To The Ridiculous!

  • You Might Be A GQMF If ...you're a member of this comm. But many other awesome reasons!
  • An entire post dedicated to THE BULGE! Self-explanatory. Mmm.
  • Oh, just that time ZQ acknowleged our existence... and we raised $17k for Haiti!
  • Spork: An Erotic Love Story, aka, the Star Trek audiobook edited to make it sound like Kirk and Spock are fucking. :D
  • The GQMF Dictionary: Our very own Urban Dictionary of sorts!
  • Chris talks about his penis. Community explodes.
  • A Pinto Walking Post (images sadly down) that got over 1,000 comments of squee. You guys. ♥
  • If Star Trek Characters Were Food... (I said there'd be some ridiculous!)
  • A Chris Pine Fashion Post! Ah, memories. And judging. Lots of that.
  • The Terran Empire Takeover, AKA, the time we made a lot of people very angry because they thought the community had been hacked, but then it turned into an awesome week where everyone's icons had a mirrorverse beard. (Here's the infamous collage of you all, which still makes me smile!) I'm still personally sorry for the confusion, but the comments and pictures that are still up are an amazing walk down memory lane. And illustrate everyone's talent at drawing on beards with eyeliner. Good job. :D
  • starlady42's awesome Character Appreciation posts!
  • The incredible Starfleet Academy week, where we high-tailed our asses to enlist, and learned about Xenomusicology, Fencing, Engineering, and graduated with a nify certificate!
  • Not something we're proud of, but as a part of our history for newbies, the post that created the now infamous Worst Post Ever tag, where people hated Olivia, people hated people hating Olivia, Pinto died, arguments were had, and we generally all agreed that it was a terrible day all round. Rest in pieces, worst post ever. Worth remembering all the same. If only so we don't do it again. D:
  • The originator of our most used party-post macro of ALL TIME. We salute you. *raises flag*
  • Your GQMF Cast: Before They Were Famous. Horrors lie within. Be careful.
  • Our first ever ANARCHY DAY!, wherein posting limits were lifted, and you bastards spammed us 260 times, with fics, macros, discussion, and classic entries like 'If You Were A Vegetable, What Would You Be?' Might not want to click unless your computer can handle it!

I've broken my brain going through the memories of 2009, and my computer cannae handle it any more, Captain! So feel free to add any more posts you have bookmarked in the comments.

And remember: 161 days until the movie comes out. Or 23 weeks if that's easier to stomach! :D

    I MISSED YOU GUYS!

    Help Japan: Post Your Threads.

(From top left, clockwise. A woman wrapped in a blanket stares shell-shocked at the damagae in Ishimaki City. A woman searching for her missing husband looks under an overturned truck after an earthquake and tsunami struck Minamisanriku. The wave from a tsunami crashes over a street in Miyako City. Japanese media have reported that 10,000 people in the town of Otsuchicho, where these survivors comfort one another, are unaccounted for.)

POST LINKS TO YOUR help_japan BIDDING THREADS HERE! ♥

As we are one of the larger Star Trek communities on LiveJournal, I think it's a great idea that we have a masterpost for people to post links to their threads on the Help Japan community. (This wasn't my idea, you can thank vickyblueeyez! ♥)

The only rule is, you must be offering Star Trek fic, art, crafts, or some goods/service related to Star Trek. It's no problem if you're offering other fandoms as well, but I think given that we are a Star Trek community, we should stay on topic, and keep it relevant to what people might be searching for.

I was going to have the threads organised by pairing, but I don't know nearly enough about all the various series, and I know I'd end up missing something out! As such, if you're offering anything over at help_japan please fill in the form below, and post it as a comment.

Please don't pass this by. If you haven't been able to donate, please consider it. It's very easy for us to scroll by and shrug, with our laptops adequately powered, our bellies full, our homes lit and well-heated. It's easy to be complacent and think, my money won't matter, it's not my problem, I won't make a difference. This is the 4th night for millions of people in North-East Japan without food, water, or adequate heat and shelter. If this was you, if this was your country decimated, your family missing and maybe dead, if this was your life, you'd want someone to reach out.

If you want to see some very real pictures that will hit home, take a look at these. I fail to see how anyone can't be affected by them. They made the disaster even more real to me, and made about real people, real individuals, with real need.

Please spare anything you can, from a dollar to a hundred. It all helps. Thanks, guys. ♥

    Help Japan.

Off-topic, but I'm sure everyone's seen the awful news about the earthquake and tsunami that's hit Japan, and the heartbreaking images from Sendai especially. George Takei has been tweeting all day with wonderful links to help people in Japan, giving out links to charities and shelters for those affected, and I think it would be remiss of us to neglect an opportunity to offer a helping hand to those in the country, and relief efforts.

Here are some ways you can help.

  • help_japan has been set up, and if you're unable to donate directly, perhaps consider using your talents (I know this community is full of amazingly creative GQMF's) to help raise money. Check out the community itself for start-times and more details.

  • UNICEF has a page here where you can donate. While the site is US-based, you don't have to be within the US to donate there.

  • The Red Cross is collecting for disaster relief efforts at their website. You can specifically pick that you want your money to go to Japan. (Click the big red 'donate now' button, and select Japan.) People can also make a $10 donation by texting REDCROSS to 90999. The British Red Cross site is also there, for those in the UK. (I can't see an option for the money to go to Japan, but their site does suggest they're helping out there.)

  • If anyone has any other organisations they support, (I looked at MSF, but couldn't find a specific link where funds would go to Japan) and want to provide me with links, I'll edit them into the entry. While I haven't found a way for us to fundraise directly (like we did with Haiti) as UNICEF doesn't have the facility to set up a specific fundraising group (that I can see) feel free to comment on this entry if you donate, and I'll total up what members of the community have raised.

If anyone's been affected by this disaster, and just needs to talk or needs support, the comments are open for that, too. My best friend is in Japan right now, so I understand the worry people are feeling, and on a personal note, my heart goes out to everyone.

If you have anything to spare, your money, or your time, please consider donating. Japan may not be a third-world nation, but there are homes and villages that have been wiped out. There are real lives that have been torn apart, and it's times that this we need to look at ourselves as one planet, not separate countries, separate people. If you're able to spare a few dollars/pounds, it all helps. Let's be GQMF's and reach out to those in need. ♥

Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow~

I mean, well really. What are you looking at? Nothing would happen here tomorrow, would it? It's not like it's a special day for sharing love and affection. Nothing that would warrant a party, for example.

I don't know what you're expecting. But nothing like that would ever happen here.

Nothing that you might want to request .gifs for, or find sparkle text again.

    Not at all.

    Nope.

Nothing to see here, no sir.

Graduation party post and Pakistan help

It's hard to believe that the end of the term is nearly upon us, but graduation is tomorrow!  The ceremony will begin at 8PM GMT.  Any additional course posts or extracurricular posts should be submitted before then.

(aka PARTY POST TOMORROW (Saturday) at 8PM GMT!)

Before we conclude our time here at Starfleet Academy, I would like to direct all cadets' attention to a distress signal we have received.

Over three weeks, Pakistan's floods have claimed nearly 1,600 lives, the national disaster management authority said Wednesday. They have affected more than 17 million people, leaving some 4 million homeless. An estimated 6 million people are in need of emergency shelter, of which just over 1 million have received tents or plastic tarps.

And thousands of people are still fleeing. (source)

Please visit help_pakistan to find out how fandom is helping and what you can do.  If you can't donate monetarily, perhaps you can auction off a fic, fanart, etc.    But hey, you don't have to go very far to help -- we here at ontd_startrek  are offering the following:

    • Three (3) opportunities to decide the subject for a future Character Appreciation post.  Minimum bid for each is $1. edit: the three highest bids will win, so you don't have to beat the highest bid -- just the fourth highest!  I note this because some of you are probably looking at [info]chesari 's incredibly generous bid and thinking "I can't beat that!"  Well, you don't have to :)
    • One (1) ontd_startrek  party post in your honor, on a date/time of your choosing.  Minimum bid is $10.
    • If you have other ideas as to what we can auction, please let me know -- I'm a little tapped out creatively from academy week, so I'm open to ideas!
The winners will donate the winning bid directly to one of the aid organizations listed on help_pakistan and provide documentation to the mod team here. Please bid in the comments!

Is there a doctor in the house?

Sooooo..... I figure, what's the use of being a mod of the best community on the internet if you can't use it for selfish reasons now and then?

It is therefore with great pride that I announce:

DAMMIT, JIM, I'M A DOCTOR, NOT A DOCTORAL CANDIDATE

Usual party post guidelines apply -- try to be kind to those of us with slower internet connections by limiting images/gifs to 5 per comment, and please don't post NSFW images.  Other than that, have fun and know that

    holy shizz, it's a ~*~mod post~*~

    A few items of note:

    1) Life has conspired to throw shit at no fewer than three members of your friendly neighborhood mod team this week, so please bear with us if posts take a little longer than usual to get approved.  Everything should be back to normal next week (or as normal as this place ever is :)).  In the meantime, we'd all appreciate whatever good vibes y'all can send our way. :)

    2) Weekly post changes! We're going to roll the Thursday graphics stuff into the Friday post and bump both Bake it So/Make it Sew and Toy Story to every other Wednesday (this week's will be Toy Story).  That frees up two days so that we can add Character Appreciation and Twitter Roundup posts.  (The Twitter post may not happen this week due to the aforementioned life interference, but if none of us can get to it this Thursday, it'll start next week.)  The rest of the schedule remains unchanged -- here's how the week will shape up:
    • sunday: tos screening
    • monday: meetup planning/recaps
    • tuesday: character appreciation*
    • wednesday: toy story alternating with bake it so/make it sew
    • thursday: twitter roundup
    • friday: graphics/fanart/fic/vids
    • saturday: questions-and-answers
    * we'll begin this week with the one, the only, Captain James Tiberius Kirk -- get your macros, picspams, questions, crazy theories, etc. ready!

    3) HOLY SHIT, SON, LOOK AT THIS SWEET-ASS POSTER cause_im_a_nerd  MADE FOR STARFLEET ACADEMY WEEK:

Starfleet Academy orientation is in two weeks!  Check out some of the course offerings being planned in this post, or speak up to add your own!  It looks like there'll be all sorts of extracurricular activities offered as well, and I'm sure those crazy kids will get up to some sort of shenanigans.  Just don't hack the Kobayashi Maru test or you might find yourself hauled up in front of the Academy Council (aka mod squad)... :)
