Fandom as Folklore

Hi ontd_startrek, bbs!!

This semester, I'm taking an Anthropology class called "Forms of Folklore," and the students have been asked to gather certain items of what we consider "folklore." The items that the class collects will be turned in at the end of the semester to the Berkeley Folklore Archive. Our first assignment is to collect items of folklore that mark or identify a "group."

My professor has been stressing that folklore is confined to the rural past and peasant peoples, but rather is always changing and evolving within communities. When I heard "communities," fandom and ontd_startrek were the first things that I thought of. I think that as a community of fans, united by our love of Star Trek, GQMFs, lulz, and being a humanitarian armada for good, we share in a distinct culture. With the knowledge of the community, I'd like to "collect" certain terms from our community for part of the project. Fandom needs a presence in the archive!

Some Trekkie Goodness at the 2010 Annie Awards

Well, the winners of the 37th annual Annie Awards have been announced, and the ceremony will be webcast on www.annieawards.org tomorrow.

Why is this relevant to our interests, and perhaps worth a look?

Because William Shatner was the GQMF host, that's why! You know that will be some cracktastic goodness right there! But he was not the only Trek-related person connected to the ceremony: Michael Giacchino had two nominations in the music categories, for Up and for Prep & Landing.
(He lost both, boo, but Coraline won one of those so it's hard for me to be too sad about it.)

If anyone finds any pics or clips from the ceremony, please post them in the comments, thanks!

Actor William Shatner poses with the director of DisneyToon's Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch Tony Leondis at the 33rd Annie Awards

ASIFA-Hollywood is proud to announce the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor, director, producer and one of pop culture's most recognizable figures, William Shatner, will host the 37th Annual Annie Awards on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, CA. The black-tie evening begins with a pre-reception at 5 p.m. followed by the Annie Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. and post award party at 10 p.m. All events will be held at Royce Hall. The Annie Awards ceremony will also be webcasted on www.annieawards.org beginning Tuesday, February 9, 2010.

In honor of the year's best in animation, Shatner will be joined on stage by a lively mix of animation luminaries, celebrity presenters and comedic talent including animation legend June Foray. "ASIFA-Hollywood is honored to have William Shatner host this year's Annie Awards," says ASIFA-Hollywood President Antran Manoogian. "We are looking forward to Mr. Shatner's unique and commanding presence presiding over the show."

This is the weekly post where members can plan meetups for movies, conventions, and misc events.

Just specify the city/country you're in and link to a post in your personal journal where your neighbors can plan the meetup with you. or else check out the list of communities dedicated to these meet-ups  Collapse )

For those of you who were able to document your meetups, please post your pics and recaps here, or better yet link to a post in your own LJ so that the comment pages here don't break the internet.

Even if you didn't take any pictures, please feel free to recount the awesomeness of meeting with other GQMF's, any funny conversations or accidental meeting of other Star Trek geeks fans. lol

Do it!

In honor of one of our fantastic moderators, Peacock, and her GQMF Dictionary, I was inspired by someone's comment to attempt to create a ONTD_StarTrek wiki.

There is far too much GQMFery contained within this comm for one person to ever possibly hope to wiki-fy alone. So anybody who wants to assist me in this massive undertaking, simply head over to www.wikispaces.com and create and account. Then jump right over to ontd-startrek.wikispaces.com/ and click 'Join This Wiki' in the left hand column.

As quick as possible, I'll try to approve the request so you can start editing. I'm currently working on entering the dictionary, but we need articles on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING GQMF related. (I currently look to the "Chris Pine's Eyes" wikipedia post for inspiration) as well as pictures to go with the articles, (I can't find relevant pics for some of the dictionary entries but I KNOW they exist).

The only thing I'm not looking for at this moment is macros, because I have yet to work out a way using the wiki to organize them even a little bit. BUT WE'LL GET THERE.

So come on BBs and let's inform the world just what kind of fan-fucking-tastical shit we get up to!!!

(Also, if anyone can figure out a good way to organize macros or has skillz in the html dept, please please please let me know! I am currently highly displeased with how the wiki looks)
