The Price of the Phoenix

Some of you may have already heard of a Star Trek novel The Price of the Phoenix by Myrna Culbreath and Sondra Marshak published in 1977.

What makes The Price of the Phoenix so special is that parts of it read like thinly disguised Kirk/Spock fanfiction. (It's also neat since it's a piece of fandom history.) I know other people have commented on this book before, but it's so ~amazing~ that I personally believe it needs to be shared as much as possible.

But you don't have to take my word for it. Have some excepts from the book!

Just in case you give a damn about the context: A tall, dark and creepy character named Omne "kills" James T. Kirk. Omne is interested in philosophical mind-games and wants to prove that everyone, even a virtuous Vulcan like Spock, can be bought for a price. While Spock is stricken with grief over the loss of his captain and best friend, Omne argues that Spock's "price" is Kirk. To prove this, he creates a perfect clone of Kirk and offers it to Spock in exchange for Spock's participation in a scheme to get Vulcan to pull out of the Federation.

Spock is ordered to "inspect the merchandise" to make sure that the clone really is a perfect copy of Kirk, so Spock initiates a mind-meld with the clone. I should probably mention that Omne leads Spock to a room in which clone!Kirk is naked on a table surrounded by flowers and candles. Also, during this mind-meld with naked clone!Kirk, it's implied that Spock creates a Vulcan mating bond between them so that he can be connected to Kirk forever tell this clone apart from any others Omne may create.

Just read the romance novel scene with the mind-meld yourself:

If you made it this far: Congratulations!

And because it amuses me, have the last paragraph of the same chapter:

They left him still standing naked amid candles and flowers. But Spock felt a slender bond stretching between them like a strand of steel and gold.

This book is totally amazing, I agree. SO MUCH BONDED NUDITY. And I have a thing for clones. But do you have this cover?

Photobucket

Most of the copies I've seen DO NOT, which is a TRAVESTY. But I found this and snatched it up.

EH?

EH?

....someone was gonna say it
It wasn't thinly disguised fanfiction. It WAS fanfiction, openly so. The authors were fan writers. They got their break when one of their stories was chosen for the "New Voyages" series, which were books of fanfiction specifically. When that story was well-received, they wrote this novel and, since in those days the whole IP insanity had not got anywhere near the virulent strain we see today, books like this were much more likely to be published.
They were the editors of New Voyages, actually.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. I'm amused by the novelty of seeing it in actual print, but there's much better online fanfiction available.
......... I'm so buying this right now
Might I suggest a download instead? :)

OH MY GOD this is the most amazing thing in this galaxy or any other. lmao it makes me so happy that that actually got published xD
OH MY GOD....I need to read this hahha. Man, so many Star Trek novels out there that I need to get my hands on.
Spock slipped in easily at the level of warmth. He had been here before. It knew how to accept him.

We're still talking about a mind meld, right?
Man I don't even know at this point.

The Price of the Phoenix ebook

Download and read and love, bbs. <3

Slashy as it is, this book has a tendency to ramble. Oh, and Kirk is such an emasculated piece of man-meat. I kinda like Killing Time more. I swear they must have started with Killing Time as a premise for XI.
Damn, you beat me to it.
